石英玻璃是二氧化硅单一成分的非晶态材料，其微观结构是一种由二氧化硅四面结构体结构单元组成的单纯网络，由于Si-O化学键能很大，结构很紧密，所以石英玻璃具有独特的性能，尤其透明石英玻璃的光学性能非常优异，在紫外到红外辐射的连续波长范围都有优良的透射比。石英玻璃采用高纯度的硅砂作为原料，制作的传统方法是熔融-淬灭方法（加热材料到熔化温度，然后快速冷却到玻璃的固态相）；制作超高纯度和紫外透射比的透明玻璃需硅的汽化、氧化成二氧化硅并加热溶解等过程。石英玻璃的形成是由于其熔体高温黏度很高引起的结果。用于制作半导体、电光源器、半导通信装置、激光器，光学仪器，实验室仪器、电学设备、医疗设备和耐高温耐腐蚀的化学仪器、化工、电子、冶金、建材以及国防等工业，应用十分广泛。高纯石英玻璃可制光导纤维。随着半导体技术的发展，石英玻璃被广泛的用于半导体生产的各项工序中。比如，直拉法把多晶转化成单晶硅；清洗时用的清洗槽；扩散时用的扩散管、刻槽舟；离子注入时用的钟罩等等。
